Schola Cantorum Summer Sing FAQs

Q. What is the Summer Sing?

A. Schola Cantorum’s Summer Sing is an evening when Hampton Roads singers of all levels of experience and ability gather and sing through a large choral work. This is a summer tradition in larger metropolitan areas, but as of 2002 was completely new to Hampton Roads. It is similar to Messiah sing-a-longs that occur during the Christmas holidays. It’s just a fun way to sing through a work that you really love, or perhaps have not had the opportunity of singing before!

Q. When are the rehearsals?

A. There are no rehearsals! Just join us at the scheduled date and time and sing through the work with us! You are not expected to master your part. We sit in sections so there are lots of people around you singing your voice part, some of whom will know the work really well, and some who will be sight singing.

Q. What do I wear?

A. Whatever you want (within reason!) This is not a performance in the traditional sense of the word, so you don’t have to dress up or wear white shirts and black bottoms! While we do have folks who come and pay registration to listen, the goal is to sing...so wear something comfortable!

Q. Do I need to bring or buy a score?

A. If you already have a score – bring it. Otherwise during registration, we sign out scores to those who need them. We collect loaned scores at the end of the Summer Sing. These scores are borrowed from various churches in the area, so we ask that you treat the scores kindly.

Q. Can I bring a water bottle?

A. If necessary, but please be careful...we don’t want any spills. In addition, we take a break at least once during the Summer Sing, so you will have the opportunity to have a snack or refreshment break.

Q. Why is there a registration fee?

A. Schola Cantorum is a non-profit volunteer singing group. We operate on a very small budget. Regional grants and the generous donations from individuals who enjoy fine chamber singing support the ensemble. The registration fee is necessary to cover the cost of accompaniment, and the other costs we incur to put the Summer Sing together.

Q. Who or what is Schola Cantorum?

A. Schola Cantorum is unique as a volunteer, auditioned choral ensemble of 20-30 voices performing choral music from early classical to the works of contemporary classical composers. An eclectic membership of singers give of their time, musicianship and voices to prepare two concert series annually, a Winter series with accompaniment, and a Spring series which has traditionally featured a cappella works.

Schola Cantorum established a Mission Statement at incorporation: First, to advance and encourage the development of musicianship in singers, both within the ensemble and the community; and to foster an appreciation for choral music. Second, to establish and develop a choral ensemble that presenst music of the highest quality with the finest standards of performance. In 2002, we extended our efforts to include the first ever Summer Sing in the greater Hampton Roads area. The feedback from area singers was so positive that our Board of Directors decided to make the Summer Sing an annual event.

Q. How can I join Schola Cantorum?

A. We have open auditions for each concert series. Simply email our director, Ms Agnes Mobley-Wynne, at afuller@odu.edu or you may phone her at 757-683-4071 and ask to set up an informal singing session. Members pay annual dues of $35, must have appropriate formal attire for concerts, pay for whatever music we have to order for the concerts, attend rehearsals at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach, and spend however much time is required to master the music for each concert series.

Q. How can I support Schola Cantorum?

A. In addition to singers, Schola Cantorum is always on the lookout for people who would like to give of their time to serve on the Board of Directors. If you have interest in helping out in some way with our board, please email our President Mary Ann Malloy. Like any small arts organization, we struggle financially. If you like what you hear, or learn about Schola Cantorum, we ask that you consider a tax deductible donation to our organization. Your donation will go straight to the cost of making music here in Hampton Roads. In addition your financial support will be documented for your records with a note from us and recognition in our concert serires program. Mail your donation to Schola Cantorum, P.O. Box 1110, Norfolk, VA 23501. You also can support us by purchasing an ad for your business or services in our concert series program. Click Here for advertisement details.
